Field Engineer
General Description
The Field Engineer supports the project team by tracking quantities, managing cost data, and coordinating construction activities on heavy civil infrastructure projects such as roads, highways, and bridges. Under the supervision of the Project Engineer, the Field Engineer helps ensure accurate documentation, compliance, and field execution in alignment with engineering plans and specifications.
Key Responsibilities
● Track and verify project quantities and support cost control documentation.
● Assist with utility locating and ensure tickets are properly logged and current.
● Support the coordination of construction and engineering tasks across field teams.
● Maintain comprehensive project records, including correspondence and supporting documentation.
● Participate in the preparation of billing paperwork and support monthly invoicing efforts.
● Contribute to safe work practices by supporting jobsite safety compliance and documentation.
● Provide regular updates to project engineers regarding field progress and site logistics.
Qualifications
● Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
● 1–3+ years of relevant experience in field engineering or project controls in the heavy civil construction industry.
● Knowledge of scheduling and cost tracking tools, including Excel, SAP, and Primavera P6.
● Familiarity with construction operations and best practices, including work with asphalt, utilities, grading, and structures.
● Strong written and verbal communication skills.
● Ability to collaborate effectively with field staff, engineers, and subcontractors.
Physical Requirements
● Ability to sit or stand for extended periods during a standard 8+ hour shift.
● Occasionally required to climb, bend, stoop, and lift up to 25 pounds.
● Ability to walk across uneven ground and navigate active construction sites in varying weather conditions.
● Comfortable working at heights up to 60 feet using ladders or scaffolding.
● Visual ability to read drawings, identify field elements, and adjust focus as needed.
Work Environment
● Primarily field-based work at active construction sites, exposed to varying weather conditions.
● Regular proximity to heavy equipment, loud machinery, and standard construction materials.
● Exposure to substances common on construction sites, including oil, fuel, concrete, and curing agents.
● May require a flexible work schedule depending on project timelines and site demands.
